Since 1521 when Spaniards came to Colonized us, we embrace too much what they have imposed to us to do. From our names, to our language, to our clothing’s, to our educational system, to the form of Government that we have event to what we should believe in to. Spanish Colonization have almost erased our Identity of who we are that even our Nationality as Filipino is questionable to us. We could hardly see any Historical accounts that was not written by Spaniards nor a person not under the influence of Spanish Colonization as even the modern Historians of today are Practicing the Religion our Colonizers brought unto us.
But I personally should say thanks that they have Used Doctrina Christiana as their own written tool to convert people into Roman Catholicism, that the friars study our own Indigenous Hand Writing which is the Baybayin in order to replace it with Latin Alphabet. Their intention was never to promote it but abolish it that many of us now do not know how to read and write in Baybayin. And I believe it is the will of our Diwata that Baybayin was written down at Doctrina Christiana as a guide for the Catechist to help them easily convert the Natives to the new faith they are introducing to our ancestors.
And according to the Baybayin Chart documented by a Foreigner Baybayin Advocate Paul MorrowAnd , the Baybayin Found in Doctrina Christiana which is a Tagalog Font was among the Earliest script to be documented that was dated on 1593.
And this table has been a source for Regional Adoptation of Baybayin such as the Kapampangan Kudlitan, Ilokano Kur-itan, Bicolano Basahan and the Visayan Badlit.
We know the importance of written language in this modern world in terms of Communication, but we do not have to neglect our own writing system just to go with flow of modernization. Once-upon-a-time, Japan have occupied us and give us liberation, but as Filipino we never have learned how to read and write in Japanese unless we go to their Country for employment. So as the people of China, which many of them can still be found in Ongpin, Binondo, Manila which they still speak and write and hang it over in their stores for advertisement of their business.
Such as this store which is my mother and aunt favorite place to dine in whenever we go there, which we could see that below the Chinese Character it has Latin Alphabet but retain the Chinese Characters for their own people to understand. Even in Hollywood if you know certain Chinese, they have their American English name also they still have their Chinese Name. And they still know how to read and write in Chinese Characters. But we, as Filipino, did you know that you can learn how to Read and Write in Baybayin? Fortunately you could!
