Many people of today would think that Tawas is a part of Occult Practices which could be define as Hidden Knowledge or paranormal. This has been taught to us by the Spanish Colonizer who converts the Filipino People to Roman Catholicism and Christianity.
Since 1591, our Colonizers have zealously change how we live our life so as on what we should believe in. They have demonized our spiritual beliefs and practices so that we could embrace the religion that they have brought unto us.

Our Graduate at Hilot Academy have demonstrated what he learned to his Family, but when Tawas is about to perform, they stop it because they are afraid. Apu, our Chief Priest at Luntiang Aghama have said that:
It is fine to be afraid because it is hard to unlearn what we as Filipino have been taught by our Colonizers more than 500 years ago.

But why people do afraid of Tawas? What is the Common perception of people towards this practice?
During the precolonial time, Filipino’s believe there are 2 types of illnesses. The first one is the Physical illness and the other one is the Spiritual Illness. So, in handling these types of illness there should be 2 types of healers as well, which is the Physical healer and the Spiritual Healer.
Before the Colonization, there is only one healer that heals these 2 types of illnesses and that is the Babaylan. Since we are colonized, the skills of Babaylan were separated into to in order to preserve the Ancient Art and Science of Healing.
The Physical Healers are called Manghihilot which employs Physical Manipulation of the Body; where as the Spiritual Healers are the Mananambal or Albularyo which uses herbs and spiritual practices techniques to stimulate the spirit of an Individual which is manifested into the Individual Mind and Emotion.
Tawas is part of Philippine Indigenous Traditional Health Care which are Diagnostic, Preventive, Promotive, Curative and Rehabilitative Health Care and Tawas is categorized under the Diagnostic Health Care.
