Empowered by Magbaya: Awakening the Katalonan Spirits Within

Ating Panimulang Biyahe

Our Opening Journey
Our ritual began on July 21, 2025. The trip to our hotel at YRS Resort in Lingayen, Pangasinan started from the Cubao Victory Liner Bus Terminal—it was land travel with just one bus all the way to our destination.

However, we faced a challenge: we were stranded at NLEX Valenzuela from 8 PM to 12 midnight. Thankfully, vehicles started moving by midnight. According to our bus driver, last year they were stuck until 5 AM, so we were deeply grateful to the Spirits of the Diwata for shortening our ordeal that night.

The driver also mentioned that they experience this kind of delay annually. When he said they were stranded until morning last year, we became quite worried—especially about food and needing to urinate. We thought our booked bus had a built-in comfort room, but it didn’t.

This moment really tested our inner strength—our body, mind, and emotions—to decide whether to continue or turn back. Many hours passed, and people began to panic due to flooding and the storm. We saw many passengers get off and walk across the road to catch transportation back to where they came from.

It made us want to retreat too, but our trust in the Ritual for the Diwata prevailed and gave us the strength to continue the journey, even while stranded. Despite the heavy rain and strong wind, our companions remained calm. When someone needed to relieve themselves, they exited the bus. Thankfully, there were a few trees and grass along NLEX to serve as cover, while women used umbrellas for privacy.

This routine repeated itself as we witnessed the sleeping passengers and were also advised by the driver and conductor not to worry about food. Vendors would approach the bus offering food and drinks like coffee, boiled eggs, bread, cup noodles—even rice meals.

We didn’t have to step out in the middle of the heavy rain. Right then and there, you could already feel the blessings, help, and support of the Diwata Spirits. Even in difficult situations, they reach out to comfort and assure you that you’re not alone.

They send instruments of aid through people who willingly take action so you no longer need to, like finding or buying food and drinks on your behalf.

This experience confirms that the Diwata, Engkanto, and Anito—called upon by our ancestors in times of need—are still present. They help, listen, and respond, whether we realize it or not.

We arrived at YRS Resort precisely at 5 AM. After checking in, we rested and slept. A few hours later, we resumed the ritual on our first day in Lingayen. Due to heavy rain, we couldn’t stay outside the resort, so we began with an indoor ritual.

The purpose of the ritual was to give thanks to the Diwata Amagaolay for the blessings she bestows, to call upon new Diwata, and to engage in self-empowerment—cutting, removing, and setting boundaries.

You can watch on our YouTube channel above some of the discussions Apu Adman and I had about what relationships truly are, along with a short video of the seaside ritual.
